Conference on Publishing in the 21st Century

University of Minnesota - Duluth

The English Graduate Student Association of the University of Minnesota-Duluth will holda one-day conference for Spring 2013, titled “21st-Century Publishing: Industry, Media, and the Future of Print." It will take place on Friday, April 12 on the Duluth campus of the University of Minnesota.

Students, faculty members, and industry professionals from Minnesota and the surrounding region will have the opportunity to attend panels and roundtables as well as participate in networking. We anticipate lively discussion on industry challenges and best practices, research in various aspects of publishing, and career and training opportunities for the next generation of publishing professionals.

In addition to presentations from faculty and industry experts, we hope to feature the research of students, both graduate and undergraduate. Panels may address a broad spectrum of topics, including but not limited to

  • Academic Publishing at a University Press or a Scholarly Journal
  • Financial Models in Today’s Publishing Environment
  • Internships and Other Training in Publishing
  • Lessons from the History of Publishing and Print Culture
  • Marketing and Retailing Books in the 21st Century: Publisher, Retailer, and Librarian Perspectives
  • Niche Publishing in 2012 and Beyond: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Nonprofit-Sector Publishing
  • Periodical Publishing in Diverse Environments
  • Production and Document Design Across Publishing Genres: Best Practices and Trends
  • Publishing Ethnically Diverse and Culturally Sensitive Materials
  • Publishing from the Author’s Perspective

REGISTRATION and LODGING
There is no registration fee for this conference. An online registration form as well as information about affordable lodging will be made available in February.
