Author Guidelines

Papers presented at SHARP conferences are expected to offer original scholarship and to go beyond descriptive accounts of archival or textual materials. Speakers should outline the wider implications of research presented. Both the thesis being tested and the conclusions drawn should be clearly stated in the proposal. SHARP prides itself on attracting members from a variety of disciplines, who communicate in a language accessible to diverse specialists. Proposals are to indicate how the paper (or panel) sheds light on some issue, principle, or practice of book history that clearly addresses SHARP’s interests.

The conference is open to both individual presentations and complete panel proposals (with three speakers and a chairperson). Each speaker is allotted 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. All sessions last 90 minutes.

Paper proposals should be no more than 400 words, are submitted in English or French and accompanied by a brief biography. Each proposal should include a short overview of the source material and the theoretical framework.

Panel proposals consist of three individual 400-word proposals submitted in one single file (not three separate submissions!). Each proposal should include a short overview of the source material and the theoretical framework. The chair or organiser of the session submits the panel proposal. He or she will add the names of the other speakers by using the 'Add Author' button. The order of the list of added authors of a session has to be identical to the order of the abstracts. The title field is the title of the panel proposal. The abstract form consists of an introduction to the session, followed by the three titles and abstracts. To secure the anonymity of the proposals, no names must be mentioned in the title and abstract fields.

Lightning papers are an option for PhD students only. A segment of the program will be reserved for lightning papers. These are intended to offer students currently enrolled in a doctoral program a privileged space in which to present their current research. Lightning papers should not exceed ten minutes and may be accompanied by a maximum of three slides. Proposals for lightning papers should follow the same submission protocol as conference papers.

Digital projects will be included in the Digital Projects Showcase, a 120-minute exhibition of initiatives that use new technology to advance research in the history of the book. The Showcase is open to both individual researchers and research teams at any stage of career, from graduate students to senior scholars. Eligible digital projects may be aimed at intellectual creation, scholarly collaboration, data visualization, research dissemination, etc. The purpose is to create a broad forum in which to display and discuss the tools that are shaping our understanding of the book in the twenty-first century. Proposals for a digital project should follow the a similar submission protocol as conference papers, including a description of the digital project in lieu of an abstract. Presenters must come with their own hardware. On-site support will include Internet access, Ethernet cables, extension cords, tables, and chairs; requests for audiovisual technology will be fulfilled as space and budgetary constraints permit.

The deadline for proposals is 30 November 2013. The program committee will send notifications of its selection no later than 15 February 2014. All participants, including chairs and speakers, must be members of SHARP in order to participate. Registration for the conference is a prerequisite.
