SHARP conference

Each year SHARP holds an annual conference that brings many scholars together for stimulating discussion of an enormously wide range of issues.

  • From First to Last Texts, Creators, Readers, Agents

    July 9, 2018 – July 12, 2018

    We are pleased to announce the 26th annual conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP). SHARP 2018: "From First to Last Texts, Creators, Readers, Agents," will be held in Parramatta, Sydney Australia, from Monday, July 9th to Thursday, July 12th, 2018, and there will be optional excursions on Friday July 13th.

  • SHARP 2017 Technologies of the Book

    June 9, 2017 – June 13, 2017

    We are pleased to announce the 25th annual conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP). SHARP 2017: “Technologies of the Book,” will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, from Friday, June 9th to Monday, June 12th, 2017, and there will be an optional excursion to Vancouver, BC, on Tuesday June 13th. SHARP 2017 will take place in conjunction with the annual Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI; dhsi.org), which runs from June 5th-9th and June 12th-16th 2017.

  • SHARP 2016 Languages of the Book / Les Langues du livre

    July 18, 2016 – July 22, 2016

    The 24th annual conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading & Publishing (SHARP) will be held in Paris, France from Monday 18 July to Thursday 21 July 2016 (with an excursion on Friday 22 July). The keynote lectures, panels, and most of the conference events will take place at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) and at the nearby Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations (BULAC), affiliated with the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (INALCO). The conference will also feature excursions to sites in and around Paris of interest to book historians.

    La 24ème conférence annuelle de SHARP (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing) se déroulera à Paris du lundi 18 au jeudi 21 juillet 2016 (vendredi 22 : excursion). Les plénières, ateliers et la plupart des événements de la conférence auront lieu à la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) et à la Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations (BULAC) de l'Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO), qui se situe à proximité de la BnF. Des visites sont prévues dans d'autres lieux liés à l'histoire de l'imprimé à Paris et dans ses environs.


  • SHARP 2015 The Generation and Regeneration of Books

    July 7, 2015 – July 10, 2015

    “Générations et régénérations du livre / The Generation and Regeneration of Books” is hosted by the Université de Sherbrooke, the Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le livre au Québec (GRÉLQ), McGill University, and Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). SHARP 2015 will be a bilingual event. The program will include conference papers, keynote addresses, a digital projects showcase, roundtables, lightning papers presented by doctoral students, a poster exhibition featuring the work of master’s students, as well as workshops and excursions. Regional Activities

As part of its commitment to transnationalism, SHARP has 20 regional liaison officers who act as both a conduit and resource in facilitating local initiatives from around the world. Regional activities include the series of larger SHARP focus conferences, such as SHARP Nancy (I.D.E.A.) , SHARP Copenhagen, SHARP in Rio, and SHARP Le Mans.
